About MeIn this early painting by John Phillip, the box-like setting, full of abundant still-life detail, owes much to the art of Sir David Wilkie, who popularised scenes of domestic life in the tradition of seventeenth century Dutch art.The interior is the simple home of a shepherd, who has returned from his flock to eat a bowl of soup or porridge. On each side of him sits a faithful companion. An elderly woman allows a cat to enter through the door to an adjoining room, where we glimpse a spinning wheel.
