About MeBevan was a keen horseman and the majority of his subjects are equine. Even whilst in London he continued to paint horses, depicting horse sales and cab-yards. His Impressionist-derived handling of paint was later replaced by angular forms, painted in solid colour, reminiscent of the work of the French Post-Impressionsist, Paul Gauguin, whom Bevan had met in Pont Aven in 1893-94.

This work was probably executed in Poland which Bevan frequently visited after his marriage in 1897 to the Polish artist, Stanislawa de Karlowska.
