About MeOne of two circular button with recessed centre and four holes, inscribed on the reverse “RICHARDS & CO // ABERDEEN”. Found at Days Bay Beach, Wellington, New Zealand by a metal detectorist. Richards and Leader manufactured linen at Broadford Works, Aberdeen under the name Richards & Co. for about 60 years, suggesting a date of 1830-1898 for these buttons.
These small buttons are suggestive of clothing but there are no known references to Richards manufacturing clothing - at this period they were known for linen canvas and fire hoses although a surviving sample book in Aberdeen City Archives does include finer linens.
