About MeAs head of Painting and Drawing at Edinburgh College of Art, William Gillies was a highly influential artist within Scotland. The linear, lyrical quality of his work and his descriptive use of colour was in chime with other colleagues of the mid 20th century 'Edinburgh School' such as Anne Redpath, William Crozier and William MacTaggart.

This watercolour shows a patchwork of fields in Heriot Valley, in the environs of Edinburgh. With consummate manipulation of paint and colour, Gillies has captured the aura of this particular place.
More About Me

I love how the clouds roll along the hills to give the painting a real sense of depth and realism.
