There are affinities between this painting and the pastoral scenes of Corot, to whom Lépine was apprenticed. Corot's influence is felt in the poetic charm of the figure group and in the use of a higher colour tone than the Barbizon paintings of the 1850s. Lépine's technique however is more impressionistic. He uses thick, visible brushwork and highlights with impasto.
