About MeIn Alexander Nasmyth's landscapes, classical elements stemming from the 17th century masters Claude and Poussin are blended with naturalistic observation. He is credited as the founder of the Scottish landscape tradition and he influenced many younger painters, such as Aberdeen's James Giles, whose work is also represented in Aberdeen's collection. The Lugar Water is a small stream in Ayrshire, near Cumnock. It is a landscape associated with Nasmyth's friend, Robert Burns, who mentions the Lugar in his poems. In this scene, everything is still; no breeze stirs the trees or water.
