About MeOn the obverse the King's head is shown in profile rather than full-face while the reverse uses mullets (stars) in place of pellets in the angles of the cross. On the other hand the cross is short and double in imitation of the English style of Henry II. Also noteworthy is the obverse inscription in Norman French: LE REI WILLIAM.Coins struck for William the Lion (1165-1214) show the development of a distinctly 'Scottish' style. The moneyers' (mint officials) names are HUE and WALTER who operated at Edinburgh and Perth. There was no mint in Aberdeen in this reign.
