About MeNew coins were minted by Alexander III in 1250 in a recoinage which brought 16 mints into operation. This was the largest number ever to work together at any one time in Scotland. The pennies of 1250 differ from their predecessors in their reverse design of which the cross now extends to the edge of the flan (coin disc). The name on the reverse is that of ION (John), one of three moneyers working in Aberdeen at this time. The alteration in the reverse design was intended to discourage the all too common practice of clipping pieces of silver from the edge of the coins.The illustration shows the reverse of the coin.
