About MeAlthough Robert the Bruce occupied the Scottish throne from 1306 until 1329 he probably did not issue any coins of his own until some years after his victory over the English in the Battle of Bannockburn (1314). Eventually pennies in Robert's name made their appearance along with a very small number of halfpennies and farthings. The pennies are rare: only eight were present in the 1983 hoard from Aberdeen and a mere five in that of 1984. In appearance Robert's coins are similar to the type introduced in 1280 by Alexander III and continued by John Balliol.
