About MeIn the early medieval period a poor country like Scotland was unable to meet the growing, but still limited, demand for coined money from its own resources. The gap was filled by coins 'imported' from England among the commonest of which are sterlings (silver pennies) from the long reign of Henry III (1216 - 1272).The penny illustrated is of the 'short cross' type, i.e. the cross on the reverse does not extend to the edge of the coin. This feature was altered on Henry's coins in 1247 when the 'long cross' style was introduced.
