About MeBalmer lived in Aberdeen for nearly twenty-five years whilst her husband George Mackie was Head of Design at Gray's School of Art.

Balmer's work is characterised by her precise drawing and flattened space. Here the delightful patterened wall paper and table cloth merge into one, providing the backdrop for the image of the artist aged thirty-two years seen in the reflection of the mirror. The central composition and the intense staring expression of the artist recall iconic portraits of the Byzantine period.
