About MeGeorge Harvey is best known for his series of four paintings illustrating the lives of the 17th century Covenanters. These paintings became popular and well-known through engravings. This painting depicts a baptism taking place secretly in a secluded spot in the hills. The Covenanters wanted to defend their religion against the liturgy imposed by Charles I and held meetings outdoors to escape persecution. Here, the congregation watches as the minister sprinkles water from the burn onto the baby's head. On the fringes, men with spears stand ready to protect the Covenanters from intruders.
