About MeGeorge Hay was born in Leith, Edinburgh and remained in his native city. He studied under Robert Scott Lauder but, although a successful artist, became less well known than his contemporaries at the Trustees' Academy William Quiller Orchardson, William McTaggart and Hugh Cameron. Hay specialised in narrative paintings, his subjects often inspired by Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels.

In this idealised scene of Edinburgh's Royal Mile pretty and well-shod servant girls queue up for milk in an immaculately clean street.
