About MeSir Henry Rushbury was a painter of cities and buildings. He has painted this dramatic view of Edinburgh from a vantage point high on the Calton Hill. Looking over the rooftops at the east end of Prince's Street we can identify a few of Edinburgh's major landmarks. Immediately on the left is the Dugald Stewart Monument. In the middle distance you can see the pointed gothic spire of the Scott Monument and in the distance Edinburgh Castle forms a dramatic backdrop. Smoke and steam drift up from the area of the station, reminding us that this is still the era of the steam train.
A study for this work, in pencil & wash, is in the collections of Hastings Art Gallery & Museums.
More About Me

An atmospheric view of Edinburgh viewed high from Calton Hill, from the late 1950's when steam engines were an ever-present part of the scenery belching smoke and steam up from Waverley station.
