About MeJF Herring was considered as 'second only to Landseer' as a painter of animals. He is undoubtedly best known for his paintings of the prominent racehorses of his time, particularly his long series of winners of the St Leger and the Derby. From the 1840s onwards, Herring's subject matter widened and although his style remained painstaking and meticulous, his brushwork gained a new expressive suavity, when he came under the influence of Landseer, whom he greatly admired. Herring's later work is characterised by a gentleness, in which he displays a somewhat romanticised view of rural life.
