About MeTristram Hillier trained at the Slade School of Art in London under Henry Tonks whose emphasis on drawing and good technique must have made a lasting impression on the young artist. Like his friend Wadsworth he was attracted to the sea and its coastline.

This picture was conceived during a painting tour of Portugal (Peniche is north of Lisbon on the Atlantic Coast). Although Hillier did not follow the Surrealists in their juxtaposition of unrelated objects, he has retained the manner of Surrealism in other ways. In particular, the scrupulous craftsmanship and an exact rendering of shapes result in a hyper-realist or surreal setting.
