About MeJohn Evan Hodgson had painted historical and domestic scenes, until a visit in 1868 to North Africa. From then on he began to paint exclusively eastern subjects, his visit to Algiers, Tunis and Morocco gripped his imagination.

Eastern and Arabian subjects had a broad appeal as explorers began to publish their travels and adventures, revealing new and exciting information about Arab life and faraway cities, which had never been viewed by Europeans.

'East and West' is a painting that idealises an encounter between sailors and Arabs, suggesting inspiring conversation and cultural exchanges.
