About MeIn 1834 William Allan travelled to Spain, following the example of fellow countryman, David Roberts. He sailed for Cadiz and Gibraltar and travelled across southern Spain being inspired by its architecture but also, as we see here, by its people.

The watercolour captures the light of the Mediterranean coast in this relaxed scene of two sailors on a break from their daily tasks. As in his architectural watercolours, Allan
pays special attention to the picturesque detail, concentrating on the colourful attire of the Spanish sailors.
