About MeJ.C.Hook was best known for his seascapes of which this is typical. Marine subjects with a narrative element were very popular throughout the 19th century. The sea is the source of income for the family in this painting but it is also a great threat as the taker of lives. To the left the father struggles to save his son who is being pulled by currents towards sharp rocks.
Hook handles his paint in a free way in order to capture the atmosphere of the choppy sea.
