About MeUnlike other students of Robert Scott Lauder, who moved to London, McTaggart remained in Scotland. Scenes close to his birthplace, Kintyre on the West Coast were a constant source of inspiration for him. Such coastal scenes are executed with a daring freedom and flurry of brushstrokes which capture the light, atmosphere and movement of the subject. This freedom links McTaggart to the French Impressionists.

McTaggart had a keen knowledge of boats and he depicts a portrait of a skiff in this painting. Its chief distinguishing feature is the pronounced rake of the mast which falls fifteen to twenty degrees from the vertical.
