About MeSeated Buddha of carved gilt wood on a lotus flower throne. He has a large urna or third eye on his forehead. The third eye is a symbol of the Buddha's enlightenment, that he is able to see the true nature of the world. His hands are on top of his lap in the dhyana mudra of meditation. The Buddha is seated in the padmasana or lotus position. This is the leg position of deep meditation.
Buddhism arrived in China around the 1st century AD, and introduced new types of art into China, particularly in the area of statuary. Receiving this distant religion, strong Chinese traits were incorporated into Buddhist art.
