About MeWellingtons (also known as a welly boots, wellies, or gumboots) were first worn by, and named after, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. They became popular in the early 19th century, as men's fashions changed and trousers lengthened, meaning that a new, smoother, type of boot was required to wear under trousers. The early Wellingtons were made of soft calf leather, but makers soon started to experiment with other materials, especially rubber.Early 20th century
