About MeAxel Herman Haig was a Swedish printmaker, painter and architect. During his career, he travelled widely to sketch in countries such as Italy, Germany and Spain. In 1880, he founded the Royal Academy of Painter-Etchers and Engravers with Francis Seymour Haden and became one of the most notable architectural draughtsmen in Britain. This drawing of the interior of the cathedral in Manresa in North East Spain is typical of Haig's balance between drama and accuracy. The tall, pointed arches soar around the elaborate Gothic altar. The large expanse of space dwarfs the lone praying figure in the foreground, as Haig simultaneously links and contrasts divine power and individual faith.
