About MeWhile in mourning you were expected to use specialised stationery that had a black border. The depth of the border indicated how deep in mourning you were; the wider the border the more recent the death. This border was applied to letters and envelopes.

Black borders on photographs might indicate the person in the photograph was deceased. These photographs could also be decorated with flowers, crosses and urns.
