About MeJames Nasmyth was the youngest of eleven children, many of whom, like their father, Alexander Nasmyth, became artists. This portrait of James' famous father Alexander was acquired by the Aberdeen collector Alexander Macdonald. James Nasmyth and Alexander Macdonald had a mutual acquaintance in Samuel Smiles, the author of 'Self Help' who also edited James Nasmyth's autobiography in 1891, the year following the artist's death. It may have been through this link that this portrait came into MacDonald's possession.
