About MeAs one of a group of highly talented young artists trained in Edinburgh during the early 1850's, John Pettie went on to pursue an extremely successful career in London. Pettie specialised in dramatic historical subjects from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and he had a particular admiration for the paintings of Rembrandt, Van Dyck and Rubens. This portrait head, depicted in dramatic lighting and executed against a dark background in hues of brown - reflects Pettie's debt to these northern masters.
