About MeJames McBey described San Francisco as "breathtaking in her loveliness" adding "with the exception of that prospect from the mountain in Tangier I have seen nothing like it in all my wanderings". In this work he views the city from the yacht club on the waterfront. By truncating the major elements of the composition - the yachts and jetty in the foreground - McBey draws the eye along the jetty and through the masts towards the distinctive skyline of Russian Hill. The crisp light and intense colour of northern California and the distinctive beauty of the city of San Francisco are all expertly conveyed.
