About Me"Archy" Reid was the younger brother of the painter Sir George Reid PRSA. He left school at fourteen and was employed in the counting house of the flour miller, art collector and connoisseur John Forbes White (1831-1904). White set out to define Archy's art, to alter his subject matter and to improve his technique (even to the point of painting on his pictures when he felt it necessary). The influence of realism and its accompanying emphasis on tonality soon came to dominate his art as is revealed in this painting. Archy painted in France where he studied with Julien in Paris. He also visited Italy in 1878. The large scale and bright colours of A Canal Scene, Venice, however, suggests a later date than 1878 and it is more likely to have been painted in the 1890s.James McBey
