About MePeter de Wint was descended from a wealthy merchant family of Amsterdam and his Dutch origins may explain his inclination for flat, panoramic landscapes, direct approach to nature and views of landscape in repose, rather than transience. This important drawing by de Wint is a characteristic example of his mature work and of the larger, more 'finished' works which he sent to exhibitions. De Wint was obliged to teach to augment his living: he became a master of the harvest field because this season of mellow mists coincided with his annual sabbatical from teaching duties in London. In late summer and autumn he would depart for Lincoln or some other favourite sketching ground.
