About MePaul Sandby has been claimed as the 'father' of British watercolour painting. He certainly was one of the earliest exponents of watercolour painting, as we would recognise the term.Sandby was singled out by Gainsborough as the only contemporary English landscape artist who painted "real views from nature" instead of artificial Picturesque compositions. Sandby's response to landscape, nature and atmosphere was an emotional one, a quality that places him within the British school of Romantic landscape painting.
More About Me
From 1747, as chief draughtsman to the Military Survey in Scotland, Sandby travelled throughout the country producing detailed maps for the army. While travelling he also painted topographical and picturesque views.
