About MeMousehole Harbour in Cornwall was painted in 1937 during the inter-war years. It shows the harbour on a smiling summer's day with no hint of the sea's capacity for cruelty. The tide is low leaving the harbour walls exposed and fishing boats beached on the sands. It is interesting to remember that Eurich was an official War Artist to the Admiralty and painted scanned of the war at sea, so tragedy and violence were within his scope as a painter.
Richard Eurich was born in Bradford in 1903 and studies at Bradford School of Art. From 1924 to 1926 he was a pupil at the Slade under Professor Tonks. From 1927 Eurich exhibited with the New English Art Club, becoming a member in 1943.
More About Me
This peaceful scene contrast with Eurich's work as an official WWII artist when his subjects included Dunkirk, the wreck of the Tirpitz and the D-Day landings.
