About MeAllart van Everdingen was born in Alkmaar in the Netherlands in 1621 and studied in Haarlem before settling in Amsterdam in 1657. River and sea scenes were recurrent themes in Everdingen's works, inspired by his hometown which was a port, and the several trips to Norway that he took during his lifetime. The seventeenth century is considered by historians to be 'the golden age' of the Netherlands, particularly with regard to its growth as a trading power. Here, Everdingen uses a wash technique to capture the busy river, rough waters and billowing clouds in the skyline. He uses ink to render accurately the details - the rigging on the ships, the shoreline and the figures - to give a sense of the bustling Netherlandish port.
