About MeAlfred Aaron Wolmark was born in Warsaw in 1877 and moved to England as a child. He was an independent avant garde artist, unattached to any particular movement throughout his career. He found great success in the 1920s with works as varied as ballet designs, decorative painted vases and portraits of literary figures.
The sitter, G.K. Chesterton, was an early twentieth century English writer. Wolmark captures his distinguishing features - his glasses, thinning hair and rather chubby face - with minimal line. Through copying portraits by artists such as Rembrandt and Velazquez, Wolmark learnt to convey his sitters' character with a similar immediacy.
