About MeIn 1840 Wilkie set out on his travels to the Middle East, but he died at sea on the voyage home in 1841, apparently from a stomach infection. Turner paid homage to Wilkie's life and death in his famous painting, 'Peace - Burial at Sea'. Wilkie's Oriental drawings, although dramatically different from the style of his early work, in one sense represent the logical conclusion of many of his life-long interests - a curiosity about human responses in everyday situations and the fascination for details of dress and accessories. Technically, the drawings are distinctive and in particular, the exotic subject matter allowed him experimentation with rich colouring in water and body colours over pure chalks.
