About MeJohn Thornhill was the son of the well known painter Sir James Thornhill and also the brother-in-law of William Hogarth. He too was an artist and inherited from his father the title of limner or painter to the King but in deference to Hogarth's greater abilities resigned so that Hogarth could instead fill the post.
