About MeIn 1817, after visiting the battlefield of Waterloo, Turner made a three week tour of the Rhine and during that time produced no less than fifty drawings. These he later worked up into magnificent, finished watercolours, of which this is one. Turner uses many devices to give effects of atmosphere and broken light - sponging, rubbing, scraping and using blotting paper. Here, for the larger areas of white, the paper has been left bare, or the pigment sponged away. Smaller highlights have touches of Chinese white body colour or have been obtained by scraping away the surface.
