About MeEmily Paterson trained at Edinburgh College of Art and also in London and Paris. This watercolour represents the interior of the church of San Gregorio in Venice, a subject that fascinated more than one Italian and foreign artist. The same interior was tackled by the Swedish artist Scholander (1863, Stocholm, National Museum). In his watercolour view a woman draws water from the well. One other version of the same subject was made in 1890 by the Italian artist Mario de Maria in 'Effetto di Luna - Il Chiostro di San Gregorio a Venezia' (Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome).

This watercolour is characterised by broad, translucent washes producing an effect of luminosity, that recalls the art of the 'Macchiaioli', a group of late 19th century Tuscan painters, whose art was characterised by large 'stains' of colour and a generally luminous palette. Emily Paterson may have met these artists or seen their work during her sojourn in Italy.
