About MeReid remarked that "Venice has been done once and for all [by] Turner…". Yet soon after his return from Venice in 1880, Reid took up the challenge, producing this painting. His viewpoint is exactly the same as that adopted by Turner fifty years before in a watercolour of the same church. However, in every other respect, Reid's painting is more akin to the work of contemporary Dutch artist, Gerrit Mollinger. Rather than the atmospherics of Turner, Reid adopts the distinctive tonal treatment and emphasis on the horizontal, typical of Dutch painting.
More About Me
Despite saying "Venice has been done once and for all (by) Turner", Reid took up the challenge from a viewpoint exactly the same as Turner had used 50 years earlier .
