In pre-Reformation times the church of Ellon was dedicated to St Mary and belonged to the Abbey of Kinloss in Moray. When the token was issued in 1714 the minister was The Rev. James Burnet, a local man, who had been presented to the parish by Lord Aberdeen in the previous year.
In the year of Mr Burnett's appointment there was a serious dispute with a group of Episcopalians who had set up their `meeting house' just outside the church graveyard and who wanted to gain control of the church. They were led by a Mr Rose, who had served as precentor and session clerk in the parish church.
