About MeIn about 1900, Peploe moved studio to an old schoolhouse near Haymarket station in Edinburgh and this small Impressionistic study of a brewery probably dates from this time.During this early period, Peploe experimented with painting street scenes directly in front of the subject and paint was applied rapidly and freely onto smaller panels. Here, Peploe has captured a moonlit evening, the smoking brewery in the West end of Edinburgh dimly looming out from the landmark beacons of Carlton Hill and Salisbury Crags.
More About Me
The loose and visible brushstrokes enhance the sense of fog and gloom of Victorian Edinburgh.
