About MeOn the 1st June 1870 Jozef Israels, accompanied by his wife, Aleida Schaap, arrived at Seaton Cottage, the country home of Aberdeen flour merchant and collector of art, John Forbes White. There Reid, Chalmers and Cameron painted this three-quarter length portrait of Israels. At the last sitting Israels seized the brush exclaiming, 'Now I will show you what Rembrandt would do' and added 'some masterly strokes'.
Dedicated by the artists to White, this portrait can be seen as the physical embodiment of this crucial visit. It is illustrative of the close ties of friendship and artistic taste that these men shared. Epitomised by the dedication is White's pivotal role in this artistic group, which heralded the introduction of realist art into Scotland.
