About MeThe technique of lacquering has been used in China and Japan since the late Neolithic period. Layers of varnish made from the sap of the native tree Rhus vernicifera are added to the surface of wood, fabric or leather. Each layer is dried and repeated until the desired thickness for carving is achieved. This example features many Chinese motifs including dragons and the bat, which is a symbol of happiness.James Cromar Watt
