About MeThis is one of a series of three plate colour etchings based on the Kibble Palace and the Winter Gardens, in Glasgow. In this series of about twelve different prints, which the artist created between 1978 and 2003, Mackechnie experimented with a variety of printmaking methods. With this one he took the novel approach of setting up a 35 mm camera on a tripod and photographing the subject on to black and white film using different colour filters. In addition to the photographic element there is also considerable use of aquatint on each plate, along with some scraping and burnishing. John Mackechnie is one of the foremost artist printmakers working in Britain and has been creating original prints in a variety of media since the 1960s. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and at Brighton Polytechnic and worked there, as well as at the University of Northumbria, Newcastle and the Glasgow Print Studio, where he has been Director since 1983.
