About MeThis double portrait of Mrs Duguid and her son was painted in the garden of their house at Auchlunies, south Deeside.Portraits painted in the open air, or al fresco are usually set against a distant landscape, but here Reid wished to achieve a different effect.
The espaliered apple trees provide a two dimensional backdrop, giving the picture the intimacy of an interior setting. The fruit and foliage have the appearance of a William Morris tapestry which was very much the decorative style of the day.
More About Me
Portraits painted outside usually feature distant landscapes, but here Reid produces a more intimate feel with the background of trained apple tress
