About MeIn the Spring of 1866 John Phillip went to Italy. He visited several of its principal cities, including Florence and Rome, where he remained for about three months. The primary purpose of this visit was to paint portraits of the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) and his adversary, the current Pope, Pius IX (1792-1878). Phillip carried with him this letter of introduction from the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872) who recommended Phillip to Garibaldi as being in support of their cause. His letter reads:

Dear Garibaldi,
Would you kindly give
a particular welcome to
Mr. Phillip, painter of great
merit, and profoundly in
sympathy with our cause, and
consequently with you. I
will be most grateful to you
for it. Remember me
affectionately.
Yours ever,

Little is known of the trip and no portraits survive, although this small sketch proves that Phillip did meet Garibladi and made a brief sketch of him in profile.

More About Me

Did you know that Garibaldi biscuits are named for the man portrayed in this ink drawing, Giuseppe Garibaldi? Perhaps he's about to have one with a cup of tea.
