About MeBuilder William Littlejohn (1731-1806) was appointed Baillie of Aberdeen. A baillie was a local civic officer in Scottish burghs, approximately equivalent to the post of alderman or magistrate in England.

The painting was inherited by the sitter's son Peter who was a colonel in the East India Company and donated by his descendents to Aberdeen Town Council in 1937.
