About MeNorman Adams was a noted painter of religious subjects in the 20th century. Church commissions allowed him to work on a grand scale, but ultimately it was his rapid watercolour studies recording the land and weather on which he concentrated.

Although abstract in treatment, Adams' small seascapes are hugely atmospheric. Here, waves are transformed into interlocking walls of water, sun breaks through clouds, rain lashes across the sky. The rain is indicated by diagonal scratches scored into the wet paint with the end of the brush.
