In the 1950s Paolozzi devised a technique by which he could incorporate ready-made and found objects into his sculpture without destroying their permanence. Gexhi, dating from 1967, is developed from this idea of ready-mades and has the appearance of industrial pipeline. The sleek, silver composition creates allusions to car silencers, cluttered pipelines, or even fictional space machines. In addition, the use of manufactured sections of pipe, cast in an industrial alloy, add to the pure physical size of Gexhi and to this strong flavour of technology.
