The large sleeve of the 1830s collapsed at the beginning of the 1840s in favour of narrower sleeves. Skirts are still full and in a dome shape achieved by layers of petticoats. A tight-fitting bodice ascends from a tight-fitting waist. The emphasis is on the shoulders with an increased sloping of the shoulder line. The dress can be transformed from daywear to eveningwear by removing the over bodice and sleeve extensions to reveal a low wide neckline and short sleeves.
The dress is believed to have come from Newburgh, Aberdeen but originated in Surrey and was worn by Janet Arnold who married a Scotsman.
