About MeThe Coats family bought the Glen Tanar estate, at Royal Deeside, in 1905.

J&P Coats Ltd were the amalgamation of two families who, in the advent of the industrial revolution, established the weaving and textile industries in Paisley. In 1812, due to the ongoing Napoleonic Wars, silk was not readily available in Britain. The entrepreneurs developed a more readily available alternative to silk, by putting on the market 3-ply sewing thread, made using twisted cotton yarns.

By the time of the Glen Tanar estate purchase in 1905, J&P Coats Ltd were one of the largest companies in the world. In 1916, George Coats was raised to the peerage as Baron Glentanar of Glen Tanar. He passed away two years later in 1918 and his son, Thomas Coats, became the 2nd Baron Glentanar and a director of the family firm.
